January's Sale Cycle~~ WHAT TO GET THIS MONTH

THE NEW YEAR...

JANUARY BRINGS IN THE NEW YEAR AND WITH IT ...... RESOLUTIONS.  RETAILERS KNOW THAT  CONSUMERS ARE INTERESTED IN PRODUCTS THAT WILL HELP THEM ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS.  THESE ARE THE ITEMS YOU WILL SEE ....
  • Weight Loss – You will find deals on weight loss products, diet foods and supplements. {Special K, Atkins and Slim Fast}  This will also be the time to stock up on vitamins.  Fitness equipment and videos will be at a low as well.
  • Organization - Look for deals on totes, desk organizers, planners, bins and filing cabinets.
  • Finance - Here you'll find books, tools and other software to help with budgeting, planning and saving.  Also, you'll find incentives for investing or opening accounts.  Check out ING.com for some great options.
  • Quit Smoking – Smoking cessations products like Nicoderm will more than likely be on sale and many manufacturers will put out coupons for these products.

THIS MONTH IN THE GROCERY STORE

January is National Oatmeal Month and as such we usually see good sales on Quaker products (oatmeal, granola bars, snack items and to a lesser extent cold cereal). To go along with the Quaker sales we should see some high value coupons such as a $3.00 off 5 Quaker products coupon. However these coupons are usually issued only in select markets in the store sale ad flyers, so you need to be checking your sale ads. If Quaker is a product you like a lot, I suggest that you go ahead and stockpile good on this one because we won’t see another heavy push on Quaker products until October.

This month is also a great time to stockpile some great deals on cold medicines. We are right in the heart of winter colds and flu, so manufacturers and retailers offer some really good sales and coupons on cold and flu medications. Look for some great deals on brands such as Triaminic, Robitussin, NyQuil, as well as deals on Kleenex and Puffs. While it is safe to stockpile facial tissue as much as you have room for really, don’t go too crazy on stockpiling the cold meds. They do expire. This is a time when many of these brands may push out a new product by offering really high value coupons and super low sale prices.

Towards the end of the month you will start to see pop and snack type foods go on sale and coupons come out.  Yes, it will soon be SUPER BOWL time.  Pepsi and Coke products along with snack crackers {Ritz, Wheat Thins} and cheese will be on this list.  Also, Tyson products like their wings and anytisers will go on sale as well as frozen pizzas.  You'll also see Rotel, Velveeta, refried beans and little smokies at a low.

WHAT PRODUCE IS IN SEASON???

Buying produce when it is in season is always going to be cheaper than buying it out of season. Fresh produce deals in January include:
  • Avocados
  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Chard
  • Collards
  • Garlic
  • Grapefruit
  • Kale
  • Kiwi
  • Kumquats
  • Lemons
  • Mushrooms
  • Mustard Greens
  • Onions
  • Oranges
  • Pears
  • Pecans
  • Spinach
  • Tangerines
  • Walnuts
  • Winter Squash
* Seasonal produce deals can be dependant upon which part of the country you live in. Southern states will usually have better deals on fresh product over those in the northern states.

DEPARTMENT STORES = CHRISTMAS AND WINTER CLEARANCE

This is a great time to stock up on Christmas decor, wrapping paper, Christmas dresses and even gift sets.  You can even find good deals on toys as well.  This is when I try and replenish my "gift tote"  for those last minute birthday parties the kids get invited to.  I also grab a few things for my own kids birthdays in the coming year.

While you are trying to stay snug and warm, many retailers are looking ahead to their spring lines and products. You will see "white sales" going on.  This is a great time to purchase towels and sheets.  Especially the "winter" items like flannel sheets, thick bathrobes, and winter or Christmas decorated sheets, towels and blankets.

And once again it will be time to start thinking about taxes.  Many places will offer great deals on tax software or online discounts for using their service.  And for those super frugal folks who have pretty straightforward W-2's you can visit sites like "FREE TAX USA" and file your federal for free.
